21st Birthday!
Yesterday was my 21st birthday, obviously this was a cause for much revelry. We celebrated by eating good food!
First, Dad, Jon, and I went to Taqueria del Sol for lunch. Dad had never been before, and since it is delicious and right around the corner from the house, I knew he needed to try it. It was great, as always. I got my favorite: cheese quesadilla with lemon cream sauce, and then I decided to try something new. I've always heard that the fish tacos were good, and I was feeling adventurous and decided to try one. It was really good, I will definitely be getting it again! The fish is tilapia, and it is fried and put in a soft shell taco with lime mayonnaise and jalapenos. I also had a tapioca-like pudding with chocolate powder on top because they gave it to me for free on account of it being my birthday.
For dinner Craig and John took me and Michelle to Kyma. I was really looking forward to this because I'd never been there before, but I'd heard lots about it and knew it would be very good. As far as I was concerned, it lived up to it's reputation. Sadly, I don't have any pictures, but it is worth describing anyway. It is greek food with lots of seafood. For appetizers, I thought everyone had a good dish. Michelle had spanakopita (spinach and feta cheese triangles country filo wrapped), I always love a good spanakopita, and hers was good. John had the baby calamari (crisped in olive oil with lemon and tomato sauce) it was good. Craig had spicy lamb and kefalotiri cheese, baked in country filo, with tomato-onion sauce. His was one of my favorites, although lamb is not my favorite, it was flavorful and surprising, not gamey at all. I had the wood-grilled octopus with red onions, extra virgin olive oil, and aged red wine vinegar. I really enjoyed it, the meat was tender, and not rubbery and the flavors all went well together. It was neatly stack in a pile with the thicker, meaty pieces on the outside and the interesting tentacle pieces on the inside. It was so much fun eating it, all the suction cup parts gave it a cool and unusual texture. For our entrees we all had a different type of fish. My favorties were mine: the royal dorado (a white fish with a medium flavor, that is moist and flaky) and Michelle's: the skate (a big piece of buttery white fish that was lightly fried). The other thing that was really good was the side of giant white kastorian beans that came stewed with tomatoes, onions and dill - I loved those. We also had wilted wild greens with lemon and olive oil. Now, at this point I feel it is my duty to confess that they have a menu posted online and that is how I have all the details about our food, but the do not have the dessert menu posted and that means it will be more difficult. I thought I chose a good dessert. I had two mini bakahlava rolls with candied pistachios and pistachio ice cream. On my plate they wrote happy birthday in chocolate and also stuck a candle of a piece of chocolate and had it standing on my plate, it was very cute. Michelle had these fried doughnut hole things with honey, John had a chocolate lava cake with cinnamon ice cream, and Craig had an assorted cookie plate with olive oil ice cream and a sesame crisp. I was so excited that he got the olive oil ice cream, I read about it a long time ago and have been wanting to try some, but the only place I knew to get any was in New York. So, Craig got it and really liked it, and I loved it too. If you didn't know ahead of time you would never guess it was olive oil ice cream, it doesn't have that sort of flavor, but it is very good. Craig basically let me have half of it because he saw how excited I was about it, and all of our ice cream was only in little molded scoops. Which reminds me, I was impressed with the desserts. Not only were they tasty and elegant, but they were the perfect mini-size, so that you had enough to get a taste of it without feeling shortchanged, but you didn't have to feel like you've got some kind of big expensive dessert to eat after you've just finished a satisfying meal. Craig and I also had something that I think was called ozou that tasted like anise and that turned white and cloudy when we poured it over ice.
I really enjoyed the evening. Here we are after dinner with Michelle taking the picture:
