Adventures with fish - part 2

This post comes to you from North Carolina where I am visiting my Mom and sister at their new house. But I started the morning off in Atlanta where Dad made me breakfast with some of my leftovers from last night. I had an omelet with lots of exciting stuff in it. There was halibut and tomato with various herbs, but there was also yellow squash and sauteed onions and some type of cheese. It was really good.

For dinner we decided to continue the fish adventure to another night. We were trying to find swordfish, but we came up with tuna instead. Emily had never tried tuna out of a can before and I insisted she would like it. We made Grilled Tuna with Herbed Aioli. Emily wouldn't try the aioli since she doesn't like mayonnaise, but other than that I think she enjoyed it. To go with it we had green beans and something really exciting (well, I was excited). First, here is a picture of the tuna without the aioli:

See that mound in the background that looks like mashed potatoes? They're not! That is celery root (which we magically found out of season at Harris Teeter) and cauliflower. We cooked the two together until they were soft, drained the water, and pureed them. These were wildly popular, it tastes like mashed potatoes with celery in it. And, since I've also had mashed cauliflower before by itself, I can also testify that this version is more flavorful with the addition of the celery root. I got this idea from the meal at One the other night when John had some type of celeriac puree and I thought it was tasty. After looking up the nutritional information on celery root, I decided it would be something I would have to try some day as well, and the results were well received.

For dessert we had chocolate pots de creme made with Earl Grey tea and other various things. I was about to link to the recipe, but decided against it since the results were really disappointing. None of us were happy with this dessert even though we had really been looking forward to it. It was too bitter, too grainy, and it had a funny aftertaste. It looked nice, but we wouldn't make it again.

Erin is right - the tuna and pureed cauliflower with celeriac root were great - the pots de creme was disappointing - I think it was he earl Grey tea that threw it off.

Mom

PS you should hear the laugher coming out of the kitchen with the two girls in cooking together - it is the greatest part of all!
